Congratulations to The Toledo Blade on 175 years of keeping northwest Ohians informed. At that time Toledo was a small village, and it's paper promised: "Truth Without Fear."
The name, The Blade, refers to Toledo's namesake in Spain. At that time, Toledo, Spain, was famous throughout the world not only because it was one of Europe's oldest cities, but also because of the quality of the swords produced there. The original editor, referring to the name, declared: "We hope it will always leap from its scabbard whenever the rights of individuals, or of the community shall be infringed."
The paper came to national attention in the 1860's as a favorite of President Abraham Lincoln. It was the winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Investigating Reporting. Hopefully, it will continue in the tradition of the original editor who described it as having "no elasticity--it will break before it will bend."
